Celebrating Women in Business, featuring Sara L.

Growing up in Rochester, Sara’s original intention was to go into criminal justice and be on the parole board. She soon, however, realized that path was not right for her and switched to a business track, later obtaining her degree in Business Administration from Baker College. Today, Sara lives in Sterling Heights with plans to get married this November. Her mother also recently married, so Sara is excited that their family is growing. In fact, she sees her mother as a huge role model because she taught Sara the importance of always being able to take care of yourself and remaining financially secure—both goals that Sara is proud to say she has accomplished.

Looking back on when she first considered a recruiting position, Sara regards her acceptance as the best decision ever. Now, after 14 years with Blue Chip Talent and in a Sr. Talent Acquisition Specialist role, she aims to be the best recruiter she can be, help BCT grow, and watch all the success pay off. Encouraging others to never give up, Sara affirms that it feels great to know all the hard work turns into success. “Always stay strong and determined. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it—because you can. Push through the rough days and celebrate the great days.”

With this attitude, Sara places a strong emphasis on the purpose behind her work. “In our business, we need to listen to what our candidates’ needs are, as well as our clients’ expectations. Our job is an everyday grind with highs and lows, but you must stay focused and continue to push. It’s hard work, what we do—but it’s beyond rewarding when you hear the excitement of your candidate on the phone and you tell them you got them the job. You are helping that person and their whole family. It’s so rewarding.”

Sara’s life doesn’t just revolve around the office. Here are some additional questions we asked to get an idea of her time outside of work:

What are your other interests or hobbies?

“Watching Grey’s Anatomy and spending time with my fiancé, friends, and family.”

What is a typical day in the life of Sara?

“I reset my alarm about three times, get ready for work, drink decaf coffee, work, get home, eat, hang out with my fiancé, and watch one of million shows I have recorded.”

If you were to write a book, what would the title be?

Let’s Talk After 10 A.M.

What words of wisdom would you give your younger self?

“Laugh at yourself, save as much money as you can, and don’t take money out of your 401(k).”

On a final note, here is a motivational quote that Sara resonates with and would like to share: “Positivity is the heartbeat of success.” She explains, “In this business, there are up and downs—it’s a roller coaster. The key is to be positive because it always works out, as long as you keep pushing and stay focused.”
